Basic Soft Top Maintenance
- Always first refer to owner's manual to follow recommended practices for proper care and maintenance for your particular model.
- Avoid exposure to extreme weather conditions. Most vehicle manuals explicitly advise owners to avoid having the convertible top exposed to heavy rain fall, commercial car washes or direct pressure hose watering. It is also advised to park the vehicle in a covered garage or carport to avoid the effects of ultra-violet rays and excessive heat.
- Keep convertible top in raised position when not driving or parking overnight. This will allow the topping material to stretch out and maintain its original shape. It will also prevent unnecessary crease marks at the points where the top folds in the down position.
- Do not store the convertible top in the well compartment when damp or wet. Allow top to dry completely before storing to avoid mildew from building up.
- Top should be lowered in the exact position as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Incorrect lowering or settling of top can cause damage to either top or plastic/glass window. If window has a zipper, it is recommended to unzip before lowering.
- Always clean top immediately when soiled or the first sign of bird droppings are present. Prolong or delay in cleaning can cause permanent damage. Also do not lower or store top in well compartment when dirty. Dirt particles may scratch the top as well as the plastic/glass window.
- When washing the top avoid direct sunlight. Always wash in a shaded area with cold water. Avoid automatic car washes that use barrel brushes. Hand washing is generally recommended for soft tops to ensure the least amount of cumulative wear and tear. Brush vacuum and rinse off any loose dirt particles before cleaning. When scrubbing use a terry cloth or a soft nylon brush.
- Do not apply or use harsh detergents, waxes, bleaches or abrasives to clean either vinyl or canvas topping materials. Also avoid the use of harmful detergents and powders that contain chlorine based bleaching agents as they can weaken top seam threads and eliminate essential oils in vinyl tops. Use of a mild soap (Lux, Ivory, ect.) is a safe alternative to commercial cleaners.
- Extreme care should be taken to maintain and clean plastic windows. Never rub on the plastic window when it is dry. Avoid the use of harsh brushes or abrasives when cleaning.
- Prior to cleaning plastic windows, first either flood with water or air clean the plastic to remove loose dirt particles from the surface. Never use products containing alcohol or silicone, instead wash with either plain water or a mild soap. Gently wipe with a soft cloth or tissue. Avoid using a circular motion when wiping. Apply slight pressure while wiping in a top to bottom or side to side motion.
- Glass windows should only be cleaned with water based glass cleaners.
