Bentley's consideration about Convertible Continental Supersports

The employees of the company say that the most extreme Bentley could get a convertible version, but the question is still up in the air. The hard top version needs some good luck and a strong show for demand, which goes to sale this month.

The Continental Supersports starts at $273,295, but performance wise there is no bargaining. But on the other hand, it is 243 pounds lighter than the Continental GT speed; its 6.0-liter V-12 power plant is rated at 621 horsepower and can rocket the hulking coupe to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds - a tenth quicker than the Corvete ZRI which achieves the same feat. Its top speed is equal to supercar, which has a speed of 204 mph.

Reducing the weight of the car does not sound like a recipe to success. But Bentley says the GTC's speed is already stiff and it has been compared with potent V-12, so he suggested, the idea of weight-loss regimen of the coupe might work out.

The Supersports reduces the weight by fitting carbon ceramic brakes and lighter wheels in addition to lighter interior materials - these are the things that are easily done in a convertible.

The decision to include the Supersports Convertible to the already existing large Bentley Continental lineup could also be firmly established, but the only thing to consider is about the environment, despite its monstrous power output. Supersports are the fastest Bentley ever and it is also the first to run on both ethanol and gasoline.

Hyundai Sonata Awarded Interior of the year

The 2009 Hyundai Sonata was recently dubbed the award of interior of the year, winning in the category of "Best Redesign" at the annual Automotive Interior of the Year Awards." Preston Hyundai in Maryland was thrilled to hear about the exciting news making Hyundai vehicles a great choice for those looking for a change of scenery and an edgy new design.

Three years ago the Sonata was drastically revamped with bolder more boxy lines on the exterior of the car, giving the body a sportier look. Hyundai Motor America received feedback from their loyal customers and responded with a complete redesign of the cabin area of the Sonata.

The old interior design of the Sonata was very generic with black plastic covering the majority of the dash and the entertainment center, making the Hyundai Sonata appear very outdated. The new design of the interior includes curvy dash lines, chrome accents, wood-grain accents and inviting leather seats and wrapped steering wheel.

The new design is also much less cluttered and works functionality into the design by softening the appearance of air vents by fitting their shape into the natural flow of the center console unlike the old interior design that made it seem as though the air vents were just four random squares cut out of the dash. Also Hyundai now offers an LCD entertainment center with navigation, a luxury never imagined on earlier models.

The new Sonata has been a best seller in its respective class, mid-size sedan. Preston Hyundai in Maryland has served Maryland and Delaware providing over 20 new Sonatas to loyal customers last month. John Skalstad, General Manager for Preston, stated, "Its difficult keeping our inventory of Sonatas up, Sonata's award winning interior is a major selling point for our customers by adding the feel of a luxury sedan." Preston Hyundai is also prepared to offer fuel savings with their huge stock of Elantras, carrying over 100 in stock.

Hyundai Motor America is proud for the success of their award winning interior designs and hope exceed expectations for the next great design of Hyundai models.

Steal a Classic Ferrari & More at Monterey Sale

On August 13th - 15th Russo & Steele will stage their Monterey Sports & Muscle sale in California, offering some incredible deals on classic Ferraris and more. We've written plenty about the multimillion-dollar auctions taking place but the R&S sale looks like a great place to grab a bargain. On the high end is this 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, with an estimate of $1 million - $1.1 million. As we noted earlier this year, this model is widely considered to be one of the world's most beautiful Ferraris. Formerly in the collection of racing legend Skip Barber, the car has not only been impeccably restored but tuned up for maximum driving pleasure.

Somewhat less expensive but no less appealing is a 1960 Ferrari 250GT Series II Cabriolet finished in a deep maroon over tan hides and a black cloth convertible top. It was imported when new by Vilem B. Haan, one of the pioneers of the American sports car aftermarket and known to readers of period automotive magazines for his catchy advertising and unique offerings. The car remains in show-quality condition, most recently on display just this past fall at the Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance.

2009 Porsche 911 Targa: lean and fast

At the recent preview of the 2009 Porsche 911 Targa at Garda Lake, Italy, one of the designer's pointed out that this sports car did not have a spare inch of fat on its body. Of course my mind immediately went to some of the better bodies I have seen, most of them in glossy magazines or on the big screen.

Well, put lean body mass to that to a vehicle and you're going to get what the new Porsche is all about. For starters: a glass roof that slides quietly into the trunk for open air driving; an LED band of lights that flank the rear; polished aluminum trim bars that skim the roofline and side windows that sail to the rear in a crisp angle. Yes, the Porsche 911 Targa is all about slim. And slim translates to aerodynamics. The 0-to-60 mph time for the top-performing PDK Porsche 911 Targa is 4.3 seconds.

Even with all that lean muscle, there's also room for shopping. The tailgate opens (by key fob) to 8.1 cubic feet of space behind the front seat. Of course, I managed to fill the back with a load of Italian purchases (groceries, jeans and tops). The 911 Targa, true to form, also has a front boot, in a nod to Italian style.

Coined an open-air sports car when it debuted for 1967, the early 911 Targa had a removable roof panel. It's name came from the Sicilian Targa Florio racing event. The Targa even passed the "hair test for ladies of the 60's" because it was a convertible with a protective shield.

BMW 3 Series convertible allows you to feel the wind in your hair while relishing its smooth power

WHEN it comes to niche marketing, the people at BMW seem to have tuned it to a fine art; they keep on coming out with model after model, making sure that a customer's every whim and fancy is catered for.

A prime example would be the new BMW 325i Convertible. If you step back and look at the BMW 3 Series, you can see that in this segment, there is a 2.0 litre 3201, a 2.5 litre 325i, a 3.0 litre 330i, a 3.0 litre turbo-charged 335i, that comes in two-door coupe form, and also with four doors. Further up, there is the M3 for the petrolheads, and now there's the Convertible for those who like to go topless! This means there is a 3 Series for any pocket size. All we need now would be a 4WD version, which I hear is soon available.

The new BMW 325i Convertible seats four adults, not as comfortably as a regular four-door BMW 3 Series would, of course. If you like convertibles, and need a four-door car, this is it. It is 'softer' in performance because of differences in weight distribution, need of additional reinforcements in the floor pan to cater for rigidity at the lower end, and there are more parts to make up the roof mechanism, but it still drives like a BMW should - safe and sure at all times.

Magnesium Award Winners Show Auto Potential

Magnesium is putting its stake in the ground as the battle to reduce weight in cars and other transportation products heats up. That's clear from the 2009 winners in the International Magnesium Association (IMA) Awards of Excellence competition. In one case a mag part even replaced a glass-reinforced plastic, and saved weight.

There were three categories, two in design and one in process. The design categories are broken into cast and wrought products.

First place for design of a cast product went to Ortal Diecasting of Beit She'an, Israel for an integrated cast teeth rack, a component in a steering wheel system. The integrated cast magnesium teeth rack replaces a traditional sinter steel piece.

"This successful development project, which demonstrates the potential of magnesium alloys of high mechanical properties and highly considerable weight saving, may lead to many innovative solutions in the automobile industry and may increase the awareness for weight-saving potential of magnesium," says Amon Wirthiem, managing director for Ortal Diecasting.

The cast design does not require insertion and riveting of the teeth rack, a major time savings. Since riveting was not necessary, the roof bracket can be cast with AZ91D which features superior casting properties and is less expensive.

Ortal Diecasting was founded in 1973 in Kibbutz Neve Ur in the Beit She'an Valley in northern Israel and initially focused on the manufacture of zinc die-cast parts. In 1995, the company added magnesium die-cast parts and Ortal now die casts about 2,000 tons of magnesium per year, primarily for the automobile and aircraft markets.

The first place for wrought product design was awarded to Posco of Seoul, South Korea for a train seat pedestal cover used in the KTX express train. It replaces a cover made of aluminum and FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) materials. The magnesium components are five kilograms lighter and cost up to 10 percent less.

Lexus convertible lures new breed

Prestige open-top motoring just got more affordable. Now for the waiting list...

The Lexus IS250C may be designed to make the most of clear blue skies, but it's set to cause a storm. The Japanese maker's most affordable droptop since the $174,000 SC430 flagship - and first challenger to the hugely popular BMW 3 Series convertible - went on sale in Australia this week, but the first two month's allocation of cars has sold out. Little wonder: the price of the Lexus range ends where the German rivals start.

The starting price for a BMW 3 Series convertible is $97,121 plus dealer charges and on-road costs; for the Mercedes-Benz CLK convertible it's $103,689. But the starting price of the Lexus is almost $20,000 less than the competition. As reported earlier this month, there are three models in the IS250C line-up, ranging from $79,900 to $99,900 plus dealer charges and on-road costs.

It seems the drop-top Lexus has already made an impact, with the company claiming four out of every five orders received so far being made by customers who've never bought a Lexus before. "We've seen a number of Porsche Boxsters traded-in, as well as the usual European brands," says the boss of Lexus Australia, John Roca.

"This car has really taken us by surprise. The demand has been pretty much instant and we're getting seriously worried about how we'll be able to meet demand. "To get customers who are new to the brand is really important to us, because it gives us a chance for more people to have the Lexus customer experience."

It's a good thing summer is still a few months away. Order a new Lexus IS250C convertible today and you may just be able to take delivery before the start of the open-top season.

Hi-tech AV systems make the trip

WHILE car makers have continued their focus on comfortable driving by using the latest in intelligent systems such as car safety and personal security, entertainment is one aspect that is gaining traction through digital lifestyle gadgets and accessories.

Volvo, for example, is targeting its newly launched XC60 at those who demand design, brand integrity and hi-tech content in their lifestyle product.

Audio-wise, the LE model of the XC60 lets the driver and passengers enjoy a worldclass audio system that features 12 Dynaudio loudspeakers and an amplifier with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround delivering 130 watts x 5.

Sound can be optimised to suit three situations - the driver's seat, front seat and rear seat - and controlled from the steering wheel, centre console or rear-seat audio console.

The audio system can play MP3 and WMAformat CDs, which means that the CD changer can store a few hundred tracks.

"Beneath the front central armrest is an auxiliary input for connecting the owner's equipment such as a portable MP3 player. A USB port is also available to make it possible to plug in an iPod, MP3 player or USB," says Volvo Car Asia-Pacific's regional network and product manager Akhtar Sulaiman.

But everybody don't have to listen to the same music. In the rear-seat audio console, there are two sockets for personal headphones, so passengers can adjust the volume and choose between musical sources and playlists.

2010 Ford Mustang GT: Good thing made better

Ford caught its competitors flat-footed with the introduction of the retro-styled 2005 Mustang, which was an immediate hit and reinvigorated the sagging "pony car" market. The Mustang's success didn't escape the attention of General Motors and Chrysler executives, who figured they had some retro pony cars in their portfolio, too. So we got a new-old Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

Hearing the rumble of those approaching hoofbeats, Ford countered by engineering the first major makeover of the current Mustang since it was introduced. Although at first glance it may not look that different, the 2010 Mustang's body shares only the roof with the 2009 model.

While the exterior was streamlined, the interior received a substantial update, too. Nothing dramatic inside, but it's comfortable, nicely done, and even on the base models, looks and feels upscale.

Under the hood, the two engine choices remain the 4.0-liter V-6, and the 4.6-liter V-8 for the GT model. The V-6 has 210 horsepower, and the V-8 received a modest bump to 315 horsepower. Both are offered with manual or automatic transmissions.

Toyota Said to Decide to Shut Down Car Factory in California

July 24 (Bloomberg) - Toyota Motor Corp. will shut a California auto-assembly plant that operated as a joint venture with General Motors Corp. for 25 years, the first time Japan's largest carmaker has closed a factory at home or abroad, according to two people familiar with its plan.

The company will negotiate the timing of the closing with Motors Liquidation Co., an entity responsible for the disposal of the assets GM shed in bankruptcy, said the people yesterday. They declined to be identified because the information wasn't public.

A collapse in U.S. auto sales to their lowest since 1976 has left Toyota, the world's largest automaker, struggling to keep North American plants running at capacity and avoid factory closings and job cuts. GM in June said it would end assembly of Pontiac Vibes at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., known as Nummi, and quit the venture as part of its reorganization.

"Without GM's volume the plant is simply not cost effective," said Aaron Bragman, an analyst at IHS Global Insight Inc. in Troy, Michigan. "They have other facilities that could easily accommodate the production that's there."

Bragman said that should the plant close, it would mark a shift for Toyota because the automaker typically doesn't "respond to changes in the market on a short term."

Newport Convertible Engineering Topping Off Production of First 2010 Camaro Convertible

PLACENTIA, California - We're not sure where a convertible version of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro ranks on General Motors' post-bankruptcy to-do list, but like affordable health care, another long promised government-administered product, odds are it's a long way off.

Not to worry all you Camaro fans eager for al fresco driving, because we got our first peek at Newport Convertible Engineering's latest project - a ragtop version of the 2010 Camaro. NCE has a 24-year history of engineering convertible concept cars for big automakers along with bespoke conversions of exotics and luxury cars. Its bread and butter comes from producing convertible versions of cars such as the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Hummer H2 and Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Every year, NCE targets a new model to showcase at the annual SEMA show and other auto shows. Following up on the popularity of last year's Dodge Challenger convertible, NCE decided that Chevrolet's new muscle car would be a prime candidate for going topless.

We'll have the world's first road test of the SEMA-bound Camaro convertible prototype very shortly, but we couldn't wait to give you a sneak preview of the car in its final stages of production. The orange SS model survived the top surgery basically intact, other than sacrificing a bit of backseat hiproom to allow space for the top mechanism. The windshield frame, rockers and the area from the rear of the door opening to the backside of the trunk are now reinforced.

Vauxhall Astra (2009) - first interior photos

Vauxhall has released the first interior pictures of the new sixth-generation Astra, showing that the inside of the five-door hatch has been heavily influenced by the bigger Insignia's.

The architecture broadly follows that of the Insignia, with (at least in top-spec models) a high-set sat-nav system, sitting above the audio and air-con controls and flanked by the central air vents. The air vents themselves are more angular than the items you'll find in the Insignia, and the dash itself also appears more upright. Other differences include much more sweeping door handles and a different location for the electronic handbrake.

If the overall ambience and quality of the materials in the Insignia are anything to go by, the new interior of the sixth-gen Astra should mark a big step forward over the current car.

Still darting around in a 1965 Dodge

On March 3, 1965, Frank Chappell went to a San Francisco car dealer with the intention of buying a new Rambler. He had done his homework and decided that was the car for him.

There were no Ramblers on the dealer's lot that suited him, so the salesman suggested they take a look at some Dodge cars on the second floor of the garage.

Mr. Chappell said, "I saw the Dodge Dart GT convertible with the top down and I was hooked."

The ivory-colored Dodge was one of a combined total of 45,118 Dart coupes and convertibles manufactured that model year. This particular Dart GT was equipped with the smallest V-8 engine offered, a 273-cubic-inch power plant that produces 180 horsepower.

When Mr. Chappell first saw the 2,795-pound car resting on its 111-inch wheelbase he thought it was either a small big car or a big small car. The base price was $2,628.

"It's a five-seater," he said. "It's really beautiful with the top down." Mr. Chappell loves to go cruising in the city with his Dodge filled with delighted friends.

The clean lines of the Dodge remain as stylish today as they were 40 years ago. The well-equipped Dodge Dart has power brakes, power steering and a power-operated convertible top. Mounted in the dashboard is a push-button AM/FM radio.

A heater under the dashboard is provided to knock off the San Francisco chill. Unusual for mid-1960s era convertibles is factory-installed air conditioning.

Last new model an epitaph for Pontiac

The just-introduced - and just-canceled.- Pontiac Solstice coupe is already assured a place in automotive history, and not only because its fleeting production run lasted mere months.

This new targa-top Solstice is the last of the Pontiacs, the final breath of a brand that failed to adapt to a changing world. Once-proud Pontiac is being phased out by General Motors, its parent, and will be gone in 2010. The Solstice coupe, a fixed-roof variation of the 4-year-old roadster, is Pontiac's last new model.

It could become something of a collector's item.

"We expect that total production will be in the neighborhood of 1,100 units when we cease operations at the Wilmington plant by the end of July," Jim Hopson, a Pontiac spokesman, wrote in an e-mail message. All Solstice coupes will have sequential ID numbers, so owners will know exactly which car of the 1,100 they have.

The coupe I tested was the hot GXP version, which comes with a 260-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. Its window sticker of $31,045 created an expectation of polish and comfort that I felt, considering the price, it failed to deliver.

Here is a car that essentially matches my definition of a doomed romance. Its drop-dead gorgeous exterior made me yearn for a fling that would turn meaningful, but a week of companionship revealed a list of quirks that included nearly every imaginable character flaw. A love-hate relationship, I suppose, was inevitable.

The spartan cabin, finished in unrelenting black on my test car, was especially noteworthy: I believe it could be the first automotive interior styled entirely by an accounting department. The only minimum-security prison I have ever visited (honest, it was only to interview an inmate) had more luxurious appointments.

The seats are tolerable, but neither supportive nor particularly adjustable - there is no place else for them to go in the cramped cockpit. Plus-size drivers should shop elsewhere.

There is virtually no convenient storage - no handy place for a cell phone, no bin to hold coins, no storage in the enormous console, no cubbies or map pockets in the doors. But there is a slit along the door sill, long enough and wide enough for a package of Slim Jim jerky.

Soft-top Fiat 500C unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show

The new Fiat 500C with its fabric roof was unveiled for the first time at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show - a car that pays homage to the original 1957 Fiat 500, that offers innovative solutions in terms of mechanical design, engine and comfort & safety.

The introduction of a soft top does not hinder the winning characteristics such as its four comfortable seats and boot capacity; it simply adds a new feature that heightens enjoyment. With its clever system of parallelogram hinges, it enables the driver easier access to the boot.

Another strong feature is that thorough aerodynamic research means that the turbulence experienced with the roof open has been reduced to a minimum, allowing the driver and passenger's full enjoyment of the fresh air.

The Fiat 500c can be enjoyed the whole year round; its features make it one of the most successful convertibles in the modern car segment. The elegant soft top is electrically controlled and has impressive technical features from the glass rear window to the third brake light built into the top itself. Available in three colours (ivory, red and black), the top is matched with various paint finishes which include three ad-hoc creations: a pearlescent Ragamuffin Red, a Tech House Grey so typical of sporty super cars, and Goth-Metal Blue (the latter available for the whole range).

The interior includes faux leather upholstery and an extensive list of market dependent standard and optional features such as: an automatic climate control to the innovative Interscope HiFi System, from the Blue&Me Map portable navigation unit to the smart wind-stop, and from the 'start&stop' system to the new collection of custumisable options.

2010 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

The 2010 Mustang has been nipped and tucked to keep it contemporary. With the exception of the fastback roofline on the coupe, the sheet metal is all new - everything from the headlights and front fascia to the fenders and stronger "powerdome" hood. The tail end is also more angular. The changes are wide ranging but are still subtle in nature.

The upgrades to the cabin are more recognizable and certainly more appreciated. The new one-piece, soft-touch dash panel and better trim accents are now a match for the rest of the cabin. The heated leather front seats are comfortable and the new centre stack is eminently logical and now features larger buttons. The stack's centerpiece, GT style, is the loud and proud Shaker 500 audio system - it blasts 500 watts of superior sound through eight well-placed speakers. With the top down, which entails releasing the header latches and holding a button for a few seconds, the Shaker out-booms those really annoying little vroom-and-boom puddle-jumpers and the awful racket the usually young driver considers music. Nice.

The test car also arrived with Ford's Sync system and something called MyColor. The former eases the chore of communicating with the outside world (the hands-free cellphone feature is a snap to pair) and it allows the driver to control the audio system simply by talking to it. The latter lets the driver personalize the interior lighting. Everything from the classy gauge cluster and its backlighting to the ambient cabin lighting can be customized. It is a nifty way of letting the owner stamp his or her mark on the car without resorting to garish add-ons (no more fuzzy dice!).

Free-spirited Mini Cooper S convertible a joy ride

We've found that not only is the Mini cute and cuddly, but also that its owners will come back carried on their shields defending the coupe made by BMW. And now, having tested the 2009 convertible version, the soft top is even cuter and cuddlier than the hardtop, though still a tad snug. Just don't tell that to those who own them because there's nothing mini about their rancor. We tested the Cooper S convertible, the higher-performance version with a 1.6-liter, 172-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder; the regular version has a 1.6-liter, 118-h.p. 4, hold the turbo.

The Cooper S is a blast, especially with the top down. And when down it lays along the deck lid behind the rear seat - and the roll bars that deploy automatically when needed - and doesn't fill the surprisingly ample trunk. Taking in the sights with the top down is so much fun, BMW includes an "openometer" gauge in the dash at no extra charge to record the amount of minutes and hours spent with the wind in your hair - and whether it's time to add more sunscreen.

The top is novel in that the front portion is a traditional power sunroof. For full exposure, hold the button and the whole thing retracts quickly - 15 seconds, according to BMW, though our unscientific timepiece suggested a second or two faster. Open-air noise levels are more than tolerable, and there's no slapping or flapping when the top's up.

The openometer is part of the fun BMW promotes with the convertible, which its Web site insists should be left down unless "passengers have frostbite" or when "motoring through locust swarms of Biblical proportions."

2010 Lexus IS 350C

Based on the current-generation of IS series sport sedans, the 2010 Lexus IS C (or Convertible) expands an already impressive line-up with not one but two models that deliver top-down driving pleasure for the performance-minded luxury enthusiast.

They get the same 2.5-and 3.5-litre V6 powerplants as their four-door counterparts, which are good for 204 hp and 185 lb.-ft. in the IS 250C, and 306 hp with 277 lb.-ft. of torque in the IS 350C. The 250 gets a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic with paddle shifter, while the more powerful IS C comes only with the paddle-shifting auto.

Both new models have many of the features and amenities Lexus customers have come to expect in their cars - leather surfaces, seating for four, multi-info display, automatic climate control, Lexus premium audio, tire pressure monitoring, a vehicle dynamics integrated management system (VDIM) and more.

A host of electric motors and sensors transform the sleek two-door coupe into a sporty luxury roadster in just 20 seconds at the push of a button. Simply push it once and the top neatly and quietly tucks itself into the trunk while maintaining space for at least one set of golf clubs.

The three-panel lightweight aluminum hardtop required a more rigid body structure all around, which results in a very responsive ride. Besides new fore and aft floor bracing, other areas that received modifications or additions include the rocker panels, lower A and B pillars and side cross members.

Lexus also revisited the issue of NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) on the convertibles, succeeding in keeping IS sedan-like levels via the use of various sound-deadening materials throughout and improved engine/suspension mount bushings.

The interior is lovely and comfortable, but to ensure appropriate access to the rear seats, the doors on the IS convertible are a full foot longer than sedan models. Much like the folding roof, a switch on each front seat (next to the headrest) automatically moves the seat to allow easy backseat access.

The driving position fits my 5'10" frame very well with the seat neither too wide nor too narrow. The interior has a nice wraparound feel to it with the tops of the doors rising to just above shoulder height. All controls are easily reachable and visibility was never an issue for me. Weather permitting, the top completely disappears from sight making it possible to forget this car even has one.

Precise and linear steering leads to predictable handling and well-balanced cornering. Acceleration is strong and gear shifts are virtually imperceptible. The ride is sprung comfortably, which is what interested buyers will want.

Those who want more can have it too as Lexus now offers a spread of 'F-Sport" performance accessories to add a bit more oomph and some personal style. Items like 19-inch forged wheels, intake and exhaust, suspension systems and upgraded brakes can bolster either model with performance inspired by the track-ready 400+hp IS F.

Pricing for the IS 350C starts at $60,400. The IS 250C starts $8,300 below. Either model can be equipped with an optional navigation package. On the IS 250C, $2,400 more gets you a voice-activated HDD nav system and reverse camera. On the IS 350C it goes for $3,900, but you also get an amplified 12-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system with six-disc DVD changer thrown in.

2010 Opel Astra Interior Revealed

We thought Opel's all-new 2010 Astra looked quite fetching, but as our mother warned us years ago, it's what lies inside that counts. As it turns out, that's true - new photos released by GM reveal quite a sophisticated cabin underneath all that swoopy bodywork.

It's almost hard to believe the interior shown here lies within a compact car. Designers worked to bring the ambiance of the larger Insignia sedan into the smaller Astra. We dig the curvaceous center stack and door panels (both of which seem to be inspired by the Insignia, but clad in quite a bit of chrome) and we like how the red mood lighting glows beneath their edges.

Although the stitched leather, mood lights, and navigation system all suggest this to be a high-content model, the Astra sports an upscale cabin not typically found in this segment. Sadly, with lackluster sales of the current Saturn Astra, along with the sale of both Opel and Saturn to private parties, it's quite unlikely we'll ever sample this beauty in North America.

Infiniti Releases the 2009 Infiniti G Convertible!!!

Infiniti has listened and answered your call for a convertible true to Infiniti standards. Released on June 19th, the Infiniti G Convertible has a retractable hardtop that remains seamless in it's sporty coupe design. The innovative clamshell manner in which the hardtop retracts into the trunk minimizes the space it takes in the trunk and capitalizes on its appealing look.

The convertible has all the gusto of the Infiniti G37 sedan or coupe with the option of driving with the top-down. With a 3.7-liter V6 engine with dual air intake and exhaust at your finger tips, the Infiniti G Convertible cranks out 325 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The exclusive VVEL technology constantly adjusts the intake valve lift and timing allowing for a quicker response and a broader torque curve, all the while enhancing fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

One of the wonderful features of driving a convertible is the ability to feel the wind in your hair. More often than not this is just a nostalgic idea and the reality of cold breezes and loud wind noise snaps us back into reality. Infiniti has tackled these problems head on during the design of the exquisitely alluring interior of the new G convertible. The Adaptive Climate Control System was developed to automatic adjust according to the outside temperature and speed of the vehicle. The heaters will increase as the outside temperature drops at night and your speed increase to help maintain a constant in-cabin temperature.

Infiniti teamed up with Bose® to ingrate an Open Air Sound System that monitors ambient noise, hardtop position, and vehicle speed. This available option will dynamically adjust the amplifier's equalization producing an untainted sound throughout the 13 speakers whether the top is up or down. AudioPilot® 2.0 noise compensation technology helps to reduce outside noise to help maintain optimum listening conditions.

Manual Soft top

A lot driver would prefer convertible car (topless) then normal boring 3 box car but is hard for most first time buyer, due to Convertible Coupe ? Auto soft top ? Manual soft top ?

Coupe convertible will have the most flexible compare with any soft top car, due to solid chassis, drive like normal coupe, but the disadvantage is obvious, pricey, heavy and very high maintenance cost (BMW 3 serious, SLK, SL and bla)

Auto Soft top, is the most popular in the market due to, almost every car manufacturer have their convertible car with automatic soft top, is simple, just unplug two button (expensive car is just one click) and a click, also lower cost to built... then free air (depend where, ok) for everyone, but disadvantage will be noise, insecure (some people found number protection on thin layer of leather), number theft protection ...

How to Restore an Old Car: Interior And Convertible Top on our 1967 Chevy Camaro

Popular Mechanics restored a 1967 Chevy Camaro convertible in 1992 in honor of the Camaro's 25th anniversary. The lesson's learned from this project are applicable to restoring any old car-from a Model T to a Lamborghini. And every restoration project provides the same deep-down satisfaction of bringing a dying car back to life. Here, we take on the interior and convertible top.

Probably the silliest bit of engineering in this whole Camaro was the convertible top/rear window. The top well boot, the rear window and the top all staple to three pieces of metal channel containing compressed paper. This channel is then bolted to the car, in theory, stretching all three pieces of cloth-backed vinyl to the proper tension.

Just to complicate matters, the top well boot goes over the top of the channel, hiding it from view when installed-and hiding it from the installers as they're trying to bolt it in. It literally took all day for two people to fit and adjust the convertible top. There's nothing difficult about it, but as you're juggling three different pieces of vinyl, a hair dryer for smoothing the vinyl and the staple gun, you're thinking, "In 15 minutes I could come up with five better top designs than this!"

Next, we laid out our sound-deadening pads for the floor, followed by the molded carpet. Compared to tag-team wrestling the convertible top, this was a cinch.

Once the carpet was in place, we installed new doorsills as well as our center console. The console was stripped and repainted and the trim polished. Then the unit was reassembled and installed as a subassembly. With the console in place, we were able to add the stock console gauges and our new shifter.

Obviously, the stock 2-speed Powerglide shifter would not work with our TH700R4 4-speed automatic. But B&M came up with a cable-operated MegaShifter that fit our console perfectly and looks very much like the stock '67 shifter. We did have to fabricate an aluminum adapter plate to mount the shift lever in the console, but that was a minor chore.

Next came reproduction rear side panels and ashtray panels from D&R. These arrived preformed and installed easily with a half-dozen trim screws each. The new door panels were more trouble. These reproduction Deluxe panels were molded plastic, surprisingly expensive and not as well made as we would have liked. We had to modify the molded backing with a heat gun in order to fit them to our doors. Then we had to move all the mounting brackets to line up with the mounting holes in our doors.

Surprisingly, Camaro door panel trim was not available in reproduction. We had to remove the trim from our old panels, clean it up, then install it on our new panels before hanging the whole assembly on the doors. Before hanging the door panels, we securely glued repro weatherproofing panels over the inner doors and sprayed the window sills the proper semigloss black. With the interior panels in place, we installed new door handles and window cranks.

Camaro seats are a snap to restore. The rear bench is made up of two simple pieces--the bottom and the back--each built around a metal frame with padded flat springs, foam rubber cushioning and vinyl surfaces held in place by the time-honored use of upholstery hog rings. With the seat frames stripped, it was an easy matter to clean up the springs, lay out new foam padding, fit reproduction Deluxe seat covers, stretch them tight and fasten them with new hog rings. We installed new rear seatbelts, then snapped the two pieces of the reupholstered seat into place.

Next-gen Saab 9-3 convertible built in Sweden?

The current SAAB 9-3 range is produced in two different countries, the sedan and sportcombi (wagon) are built in Sweden, and the convertible is built in Germany. But news German newspaper the Handelsblatt indicates that the entire range of the next-generation 9-3s will be produced in Sweden as oppose to Germany.

The changes come amid a rethink for the next-generation 9-3, it will be smaller and hence based on a smaller platform. This results in a potential shift away from the Vectra platform to GM's Delta platform.

Trollhatten in Sweden (the hometown of Saab) may therefore get back full production of the 9-3 range, which would make Saab fans happy. Given the uncertainty surrounding the cars production, the current 2009/10 release date has been delayed until 2011/12.

Infiniti's cabrio

The Infiniti G37 Convertible - Nissan's luxury rival to the BMW 3-Series Convertible and Audi A5 Cabriolet - goes on sale in the UK this autumn, and we've got a bunch more details on the really-quite-good-looking drop-top.

Powered by a lightly detuned version of 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine from the Nissan 370Z, putting out 316bhp, the G37 will reach 60mph in 6.2 seconds and hit the limiter at 155mph - putting it squarely between BMW 330i and 335i convertible pace.

Like the 3-Series, the G37 gets a folding hard-top, a three-piece arrangement that lowers in 25 seconds. If you're feeling a bit show-off, there's a button on the door handle to lower the roof from the outside (best used when the car is stationary, we'd advise), allowing you to nonchalantly continue your converstion with your boss/secretary/illicit weekend squeeze while the roof folds away behind you. Neat.

It's a well-kitted car: even the lower-spec GT version gets leather, heated seats and Infiniti's clever self-healing paint, while the top-spec GT premium gets a 30GB entertainment system and a tiny chimpanzee butler.

Lotus Evora Convertible Planned for 2011

Lotus is currently preparing for the launch of the 2010 Evora, and it's already planning to expand the model range with a convertible version.

Given the Evora's price point, one might expect an electric top for the convertible, but that's not likely to see production. Lotus has been working hard to develop an electric unit that does not compromise on the company's values of lightness and chassis rigidity.

"The open-top will need to have a light roof. It's most likely going to be a soft-top as a hard-top system is very heavy and complicated; that really doesn't belong in a sports car, and is not a Lotus way of working," Evora designer Steve Crijns told Autocar.

"It's not going to be easy to fit the roof in. It will have to go in front of the engine, where the rear seats are now," added Crijns. "The rest of the car has been designed with the cabrio in mind; the doors, for instance, are styled so that they can accommodate the system without any changes."

Expect to see variations on the Evora to start appearing within two years. The supercharged models are planned to launch in around two years and the convertible is planned for a 2012 launch at the latest.

Review: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

Chopping the top off a car isn't as easy as it sounds, especially when the fixed roof is replaced with a folding one of the steel variety - the panels and system of motors and hinges add significant weight. Worse, in order to get the whole mess to fit in the trunk, a folding hard top often requires a bubbly, arching roofline and an ungainly, long rear deck. If you've had the displeasure of studying a Volkswagen Eos, you know what we're talking about.

Now, Infiniti - which hasn't produced a droptop in ages - has created a hardtop convertible G37 that has lost almost none of its elegant coupe sibling's visual appeal. And although the retractable roof and robust structural bracing add some 450 pounds to the car's mass, the G37's driving experience also has been largely preserved. That means blistering acceleration, brilliant ride and handling, and a cockpit that's among the prettiest in the business.

Even though the G37's chassis is new from the A-pillar rearward, the experience from behind the wheel is identical to that of the coupe. The familiar VVEL 3.7-liter V-6 carries over, but it produces five fewer horses due to a slightly more restrictive exhaust. Transmissions migrate over as well - buyers can choose a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic. We prefer the automatic, which dampens much of the V-6's roughness and provides better off-the-line acceleration, thanks to delightfully short gear ratios. A sport package that mirrors the coupe's - although without the limited-slip differential - is available with the automatic (and standard with the stick), but all-wheel drive is not offered.

Lowering the roof requires nothing more than the press of a button and a somewhat lengthy thirty seconds. Air movement is very well controlled inside the cabin, especially with the optional wind blocker. To ensure year-round comfort, you can order heated and cooled seats, and headrest-mounted Bose speakers are available, too.

What's so difficult about making a convertible, you say? Deciding what compromises to make for the sake of beauty, that's what. In order to keep the G37's sexy silhouette, Infiniti had to relocate the rear suspension's upper mounting points so the top would fit in the trunk. It does - but it leaves almost no room for cargo. With the top down, you'd be hard-pressed to fit two Ziploc freezer baggies back there. That is, if you can get the trunk open in the first place - the heavy lid lacks any kind of handle and is difficult to open.

Asking rear-seat passengers to hold your luggage will be an exercise in the art of persuasion. They have almost five inches less legroom than they would in the back of a BMW 3-series droptop, so they won't be happy. Just reassure them that they look fabulous in the G37, and drown out their complaints with that trademark Infiniti exhaust song.

Miata Convertible Tops

Did you know the Mazda Miata is celebrating it's 20th birthday this year? That's right... this car first made its debut in 1989. Although it has came a long way, the car still holds true to many of the fundamental Miata features is was built upon - delivering a great roadster convertible for an affordable price.

However with so many older ones on the road, the need for Miata convertible tops has been on the rise. This is especially true in many areas with extreme weather; snow, sun, and everything in between. But how does one go about replacing their soft top and how much should the expect to pay?

Fortunately, this can be done for a very affordable price. It is possible to buy a high quality Miata replacement top for under a $1,000. Considering that this investment makes your car instantly look newer and increases its resale value, it's a wise decision for many people.

However, count on paying up to $100 to $150 or so more for professional installation. Don't do this through the dealership unless you want to pay an arm and a leg! You should be able to find a local mom and pop body shop that will install it for next to nothing.

The other easy fix you can do on your Miata is a good application of premium wax. There are some waxes which can rejuvenate the shine of your paint. Spend $25 on a bottle of wax, some terry cloths, and a couple hours of your time, and you can instantly shave a few years off your car's age.
